About GAP
The Government Accountability Project is an effective and agile public interest organization dedicated to advancing whistleblower rights in the United States and abroad. Founded in 1977 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit by current President Louis Clark and current Legal Director Tom Devine, GAP’s mission is to hold corporate, government, and international institutions accountable when they harm the public interest. We do this by forcing public officials and corporate executives to address whistleblower disclosures. These disclosures include complaints about corruption, threats to public health and safety, revelations about misconduct, as well as negligence, fraud, censorship, and abuse of power. GAP is best known for its defense of whistleblowers from agencies charged with protecting national security, the environment, the economy, public health, public safety, and nuclear facilities. We also defend whistleblowers and push for whistleblower protections at the United Nations, the World Bank, and the multilateral development banks. Today, GAP’s 22-member staff includes veteran attorneys and advocates who have pioneered the public policies and case law for whistleblower protection in the United States and around the world. With an annual budget of over $2.5 million, GAP’s activities are supported by a broad base of foundation grants, major donors, gifts from over 10,000 individuals across the country, and attorney fees.
